Martha Bailie + Camilla Grudova Winnipeg Launch

McNally Robinson Booksellers | 1120 Grant Avenue, Winnipeg Oct 30 07:00 pm - Oct 30 09:00 pm

We're launching our fall fiction titles with the wickedly wonderful McNally Robinson staff. Expect shadow puppets, klezmer music, and plenty of dark, sinuous vibes.
In If Clara by MARTHA BAILLIE, no one stands on firm ground. Daisy, an author confined to her home, her leg in a cast from hip to ankle, receives a parcel containing the manuscript of a brilliant novel about a Syrian refugee in North America. She's asked by its author, Clara, to pose as a fictional Syrian writer. Perspectives shift, boundaries between art and life, viewer and object, are breached, and all of these stories unfold, collide and fall into place in a most unexpected way.
The Doll's Alphabet is CAMILLA GRUDOVA's debut short story collection from an unholy marriage of Angela Carter, Sheila Heti, and H. P. Lovecraft. Full of dolls, sewing machines, tinned foods, mirrors, malfunctioning bodies, Camilla Grudova has built a universe that's highly imaginative, incredibly original, and absolutely discomfiting.

Sina Queyras - My Ariel launch in Winnipeg

McNally Robinson Booksellers | 1120 Grant Avenue, Winnipeg Nov 13 07:00 pm - Nov 13 09:00 pm

In conjunction with Winnipeg International Writers Festival & McNally Robinson Booksellers, we're launching My Ariel, Sina Queyras's latest collection of poetry - My Ariel

In My Ariel, Sina Queyras barges into Plath's iconic text with her own family baggage, as well as Plath's in tow, exploring and exploding the cultural norms and forms that frame and contain the lives of women. Profound reconsiderations of the individual poems and of Plath's biography collide with Queyras's own confessional writing and blow apart our ideas of what it means to be a poet.

Hosted by local poet Lori Cayer, author of Attenuations of Force (Frontenac House, 2010) and Stealing Mercury (The Muses’ Company, 2004).
