Martha Baillie @ Calgary Wordfest - Provocative Perspectives

Glenbow Museum Theatre | 130 9th Ave SE, Calgary Oct 15 10:00 am - Oct 15 11:30 am

Trust us: you won’t want to miss out on this exploration of the borders of identity. Ghada Alatrash’s short stories offer a re-representation of a rich Syrian culture that is seldom seen fully in Western media. A Syrian refugee in Toronto asks a bed-ridden author to pretend to be the author of her memoir in Martha Baillie’s If Clara. Nicole Lundrigan uses the delicious device of an unreliable narrator to chilling effect in The Substitute, in which a teacher may or may not have murdered one of his students. And, finally, Alison Pick re-imagines the ultimate divided state of present-day Israel and Palestine as the backdrop for a love story that shows how idealism quickly tumbles into pragmatism, and how the utopian dream is punctured by messy human entanglements.

Suzette Mayr @ Vancouver Writers Festival - Modern Day Satire

Waterfront Theatre | 1412 Cartwright St., Vancouver Oct 17 06:00 pm - Oct 17 07:30 pm

Vices, follies, abuses and shortcomings—all fodder of great satire—are on full display in the work of these two writers, who’ve chosen the long-established satire genre to put our lives under the microscope. Tom Perrotta takes a swipe at sexuality, identity and parenthood in modern-day America, as his Mrs. Fletcher explores the erotic exploits of middle-aged women just like herself. Suzette Mayr turns a campus novel into a darkly funny gothic horror story of cutthroat peers, ruthless administration, and maggot-and hare-infested haunted halls. Satire done well has always made us laugh, albeit a little uncomfortably, at our own behaviour.
